Surfing in Nicaragua: A Comprehensive Guide to the Best Surf Season

by Los Clavos 19 févr. 2023
If you're looking for a surfing destination that offers consistent waves, warm water, and uncrowded breaks, look no further than Nicaragua. Thanks to its equatorial location and offshore winds, Nicaragua has great surf conditions all year round. But when is the best time to catch the perfect wave?

In this article, we'll take a closer look at Nicaragua's two distinct seasons and help you find the best surf season for your skill level.

Dry Season Surfing in Nicaragua (November to April)

If you're a beginner or intermediate surfer, the dry season in Nicaragua, which runs from November to April, might be the perfect time for you! And this is not only because of Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation.

During this period, you can expect mellow waves and offshore surf sessions all day long, making it an ideal time to learn how to surf. The scenery is also breathtaking, with the green lush landscape from the wet season still visible. The waves are perfectly shaped and gentle and not too powerful. This means you'll have plenty of opportunities to catch waves during your stay at Los Clavos Surf Camp.

The water temperature is around 82° F at this time of the year so no wetsuit allowed!!

Experienced surfers will  find good waves during the dry season, especially in the first few months. In our area, The Boom is a world-class surfbreak that you’d better get to know during the dry season anyway.

However, if you're looking for big waves and massive barrels, you may want to consider visiting Nicaragua during the wet season instead.

Wet Season Surfing in Nicaragua (May to October)

For experienced surfers, the wet season in Nicaragua, which runs from May to October/November, is the time to be there. During this period, the consistent swells and offshore winds create ideal surfing conditions that are perfect for experienced surfers looking for a challenge.

We get bigger swells and advanced surfers enjoy it. The waves are bigger, more powerful, and more reliable, making it an ideal time to score some big waves and deep barrels.

While the weather can be a bit unpredictable during the wet season, the constant influx of swells ensures that you'll always find quality surf. The water temperature is warm, and you'll be surfing in less crowded places.

Is wet season suitable for beginners surfers in Nicaragua?

Absolutely! There is a dry window between mid-July and mid-August with smaller waves and less rain and our guests love it!  Why? Because there are even less people in the water than during the dry season.

And anyway, bear in mind that around Los Clavos Surf Camp, we are lucky to be within walking distance from a very nice empty fall-back surf spot that works all the time even with big swells. It’s sandy bottomed so you will not get hurt no matter if you get wiped-out a few time.

Why is wet season my favorite surf season?

Well, if you come to Nicaragua for a vacation and you need sun and small or medium waves to have fun and to progress, I recommend you of course the dry season.

But if you have the chance to come back for a second stay or to stay longer, I can guarantee you that you will love the wet season. Everything becomes green again, nature is wilder, you feel really out of place!  So that's my local advice.
